How does STRESS affect the body?

Stress can have a significant impact on the body, and one of the key ways it does so is through the release of cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal gland in response to stress. When the body perceives a threat or a stressor, the hypothalamus in the brain triggers the release of cortisol, which in turn triggers the "fight or flight" response in the body.

While the "fight or flight" response is a normal and necessary physiological response to stress, chronic stress can lead to chronically elevated levels of cortisol in the body. This can have a range of negative effects on the body, including:

  1. Increased blood sugar: Cortisol raises blood sugar levels, which can be useful in short bursts to provide the body with extra energy during times of stress. However, chronically elevated cortisol levels can lead to insulin resistance and diabetes.

  2. Suppressed immune function: Cortisol suppresses immune function, which can make the body more susceptible to infections and illnesses.

  3. Increased inflammation: Chronically elevated cortisol levels can also lead to increased inflammation in the body, which has been linked to a range of chronic diseases.

  4. Increased risk of heart disease: Elevated cortisol levels have been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, likely due to their effects on blood sugar, blood pressure, and inflammation.

  5. Negative impact on mental health: Chronic stress and elevated cortisol levels have been linked to a range of mental health issues, including depression and anxiety.
